Ishmael is a scientific project inspired by the Melville’s character. It aims to investigate the distribution the ecology of the Mediterranean sperm whales. During three years researchers will be engaged in oceanographic campaigns to reveal the secrets of the greatest predators in the oceans and to understand the fragile Mediterranean pelagic ecosystem. ISHMAEL is the acronym for Investigating Sperm whale Habitat in the MArine Environment of the Ligurian and Corsica seas. The ISHMAEL project is sponsored by TOTAL Foundation. The Scientific Staff of the Biology Department and CIMA Research Foundation (University of Genoa) will carry out at sea campaigns off the coast of Liguria, Corsica and Sardinia, on board of the research vessel “Menkab”. The western portion of the Pelagos Sanctuary will be investigated by several hundred acoustic stations and visual surveys, in order to provide distribution and abundance estimates of the sperm whale population. The project includes also the implementation of an innovative hydrophone array to detect whale position. Ishmael is also information and education. A travelling exhibition will move from port to port along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, to report the results of scientific research and to tell about the "adventures" of Menkab crew.
ISHMAEL è l’acronimo di Investigating Sperm whale Habitat in the MArine Environment of the Ligurian and Corsica seas.
